Happy Birthday George Washington
|It’s birthday time for President Washington – our first commander-in-chief was born a whopping 285 years ago today. Traditionally, both Washington and Lincoln have their birthdays collective recognized on Presidents’ Day, but we’ve prepared a blog post to talk a little bit more about General Washington, and maybe throw in a few extra special auctions (if you didn’t get a chance to snag any from the other day).
George Washington: The Man, The President
- Washington was born in Pope’s Creek, VA, on February 22nd, 1732.
- In 1751, Washington contracted smallpox while visiting Barbados, and survived. For the rest of his life, he held an immunity to the disease that wreaked havoc on the colonies.
- Washington was considered to be quite a good dancer.
- On January 6th, 1759, Washington married the widow Martha Dandridge Custis. They were both in their late 20s.
- During the American Revolutionary War, Washington lost more battles than he won.
- Washington is, to date, the only president to be unanimously elected to the office.
- The White House was not completed until after Washington’s death. He was the only president to never occupy it.
- Most modern doctors agree that Washington’s cause of death was acute epiglottitis.
