Mad About Mardi Gras

  • The festival dates back thousands of years. Originally, it was a celebration of fertility.
  • Some of the biggest Mardi Gras parties are held in Brazil and Venice, Italy. Typically, though, it is celebrated globally in communities with a large Roman Catholic population.
  • When Christianity spread through Europe, the festival was adopted as a prelude to the eventual Easter celebrations.
  • It is believed that the festival was first celebrated in America back in 1699, when French explorers landed in what is now Louisiana, just south of modern-day New Orleans.
  • In the USA, only Louisiana recognizes the carnival as a legal holiday.
  • Mardi Gras is also known as “Shrove Tuesday,” which is derived from a word meaning “confess.”
  • Typically, the celebrations last more than one day. It is tradition that Mardi Gras is observed starting from the end of the Christmas season (January 6th) to the start of the Roman Catholic season of Lent (which immediately precedes Easter).
