1870 Silver NGC Slabbed PF-63 J-837, P-928 Dime Pattern Coin
A pattern coin is a coin struck by the U.S. Mint for the purpose of evaluating a proposed coin design, and is not meant for circulation. They are among the rarest coins ever struck at the U.S. Mint, they are collected or studied by many coin collectors because of their sometimes highly elaborate designs.
The “Standard Silver Dime” with the bust of Liberty facing right wearing Phrygian cap ornamented by three stars. Obverse has the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and a scroll inscribed with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST below. Reverse is with 10 CENTS 1870, enclosed within a wreath of cotton and corn, the inscription, STANDARD, above.
Struck in silver with a reeded edge – bright and lustrous with reflective fields and faintly frosted motifs. A hint of pale champagne adorns both sides.
It is very scarce with a rarity index of 5 – only 48 pieces are known to exist.
