- Peridot is a gem-quality form of olivine, also referred to as chrysolite.
- The gem is usually found among rocks that were created by volcanoes and buried deep underground (igneous rocks), so wherever there are or was volcanoes, this mineral is likely to be found.
- According to the Oxford English Dictionary, peridot takes its name from the Anglo–Norman pedoretés, a kind of opal.
- Many believe the peridots symbolize love, truth, faithfulness and loyalty. This gemstone’s energies are also believed to suppress ego and jealousy.
- According to the National Association of Jewelers, peridots have been the official birthstone of August (alongside Sardonyx) since 1912.
- Ancient Romans called peridot the ‘evening emerald,’ as they did not darken at night and shimmered under candlelight.
